A 20-Pound Fish Is Political Write-In Candidate In Ann Arbor, MI

The campaign of Ann Arbor, MI City Council write-in candidate, 20-pound carp, has gone viral, but will the candidate’s fishy rise from obscurity to relevance be a success or a flop?

The twenty pound fish is concentrating his (or her) efforts on winning the 4th Ward Council race against Democrat Jack Eaton, who is running otherwise unopposed. Eaton is not taking the challenge lightly. Eaton stated:

I consider a 20-pound carp to be a substantial opponent and I wish him the best.

Eaton already defeated an incumbent council person in the Democratic primary earlier this year, so he has shown that he is up to the challenge.

Twenty-pound carp remains a long shot candidate since Ann Arbor does not have any underwater polling stations and Michigan law does not permit fish to vote. In addition, the carp failed to file paperwork, so votes for the fish will not be officially tallied.

Still the floundering campaign has some cause for optimism. After all, Talkeetna, Alaska has had Stubbs the Cat as their Mayor for sixteen years, and they seem happy with the feline fellow’s job performance. Furthermore, Georgia once elected a Newt for Congress and he became speaker of the House, earning the respect of fellow Republicans. He even ran for President in 2012.

Many political analysts will point out that Stubbs was a real cat but that Newt was not a real salamander. Come to think of it, perhaps a real salamander would have been a better choice.

Ann Arbor residents will have to decide today whether to consider voting for 20-pound carp or whether to dismiss the fish as a bottom feeding candidate shamelessly trolling for the sucker vote.
