On the day before Passover, a lone gun man went on a shooting spree in Overland Park, Kansas, at a Jewish Community Center and an assisted living facility. The armed assailant killed three people and wounded two others. The shootings took place in the parking lot of the Jewish Community Center and at Village Shalom, a nearby retirement community. A white male suspect, believed to be in his 70s, was taken into custody. He allegedly made anti-Semitic remarks, and witnesses reportedly heard him say “Heil Hitler” from the back of the police squad car, although police have not confirmed whether those reports are accurate.

The suspect used a shotgun in the killings and also was in possession of a hand gun. No motive is known yet, but Overland Park police chief John Douglass stated that the slayings are being investigated as possible hate crimes. The FBI is participating in the investigation. The suspect’s identity has not been released, but he is apparently not a Kansas resident. The community center will be closed tomorrow.?Overland Park is a suburban community in the Kansas City metro area that is home to nearly 175,000 residents.
