On the April 24 episode of The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert regaled his audience with a ditty called “The Ballad of Cliven Bundy.” The song is appropriate because, as he put it, every folk hero deserves a folk song.
Bundy, the Bunkerville, Nevada rancher who owes $1 million in grazing fees for permitting?his cattle to graze on federal land for two decades, has indeed?emerged as a Tea Party folk hero. This is the guy, after all, who said:
I don’t recognize the United States government as even existing.
Such a radical statement automatically elevates?Bundy to the upper echelon of right-wing darling-hood, alongside Ted Nugent, George Zimmerman and Vladimir Putin.
Granted, some prominent conservatives and talking heads at FOX News have distanced themselves from Bundy of late after he made racist comments suggesting blacks would be “better off as slaves.” Even Sen. Rand Paul, who has strong ties to racism, was forced to condemn the rancher over Twitter:
Cliven Bundy's remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him. READ: http://t.co/DAxHVW5LK9

Regardless, there are still those who believe Bundy has every right to repeatedly allow his cattle to graze on federal property and refuse to pay the resultant fees.
