Maryland Teen Receives HS Diploma At Bedside Of Terminally Ill Mom

girl graduated mom cancer bedside

When Megan Sugg graduated from high school on Thursday, she was like most girls. She stood in a cap and gown and listened to her high school principal read a graduation speech. Her family was on hand to witness her receiving her diploma and they cheered for her as she moved her tassel from one side of her cap to the other. There was something different about this graduation ceremony, however. It was conducted at the bedside of Megan’s terminally ill mother.

Darlene Sugg was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2010 at the age of 44. Though she went into remission for a year, the cancer unfortunately metastasized to her liver. The Sugg family learned that Darlene wouldn’t live long enough to see Megan receive her high school diploma?on June 10, so they collaborated with staff at the high school to pull together a bedside graduation in one day.

From the Maryland Gazette:

Principal Vickie Plitt, Assistant Principal Clayton Culp and school counselor Kristin Canevazzi bought flowers and collected gowns from last year’s graduation.

?I was surprised they came out so fast because principals are so busy,? Megan said. ?It was supportive and really nice of them.?

?I know how proud her mom is of her and we really wanted to give her family a special time,? she said. ?And to really honor Megan, because as much as she’s had going on, she’s pushed through and is going to graduate high school.?

Megan Sugg plans to pursue a career as a dietitian and fitness model.
