Perhaps we have always known that there was something–shall we say–a bit different about Russian President Vladimir Putin. Some have said he appears to have no soul or even feelings of any kind. But in 2001, former President George W. Bush said:

“I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy and we had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul. He’s a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country and I appreciate very much the frank dialogue and that’s the beginning of a very constructive relationship.”

Well, obviously, Dubya was the not the best judge of a man’s character. Afterall, this is the guy who put Dick Cheney (aka Dr. Evil) a heartbeat away from being the man with the codes to our nuclear weapons.

The Pentagon, however, had its own opinions on why Putin acts the way he does, and in 2008 they determined the Russian President:

“…has Asperger’s syndrome, an autistic disorder which affects all of his decisions.”

This conclusion, made by a Pentagon think tank and issued in a report, also speculated that:

“(Putin’s) neurological development was significantly interrupted in infancy.”

As a result of having Asperger’s syndrome, the Pentagon concluded?Putin used an authoritarian style of governance and was obsessed with “complete control” as a way of compensating for the condition.

Asperger’s is a developmental disorder which affects how a person perceives and communicates with the world. Famous individuals with Asperger’s include comedian Dan Ackroyd, singer Susan Boyle, and actress Daryl Hannah. Albert Einstein is also believed to have had Asperger’s syndrome.

While it’s impossible to know if Putin does indeed have Asperger’s without performing a brain scan on him, one thing seems pretty certain: you cannot hope to take the full measure of a man just by looking into his eyes.
