There are very few things more innocent and more headache-inducing than a 10-year-old girl’s birthday party. In Memphis, Tennessee a little girl wrote her classmate a cute note apologizing because she could not attend her party. This innocent note took a dark turn when the reason for her absence was revealed.
Apparently her father would not let her go, because her classmate was black. The thing that really saddened me was the nonchalant innocence of this note. This little girl really did not have any malice in her words, yet the gravity of that one sentence was still there.
This story is a painful reminder that we still have a long way to go with regards to race relations in this country; Racism isn’t “over” by any stretch of the imagination. The good news is that her classmate had a great sleepover birthday party; maybe we can learn a lesson from that part of the story as well.
