What’s Next For Everett Golson?

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team will be without quarterback Everett Golson next season as Golson has graduated and announced that he would be transferring from Notre Dame.

He won’t have to sit out a season because he has graduated and will be able?play immediately,?dodging the normally?stringent NCAA policies.

Golson had this to say,

“I would like to thank everyone at Notre Dame for the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college football but most importantly to obtain my degree from one of the finest universities in the country,” Golson said in a prepared statement. “To all the Fighting Irish fans I want to thank you for the support over the past four years and let you know I truly love Notre Dame! To my former teammates, who I will miss tremendously, I wish much success in the future and will be your biggest fan from afar.”

While the 6 foot senior is unsure where his next stop will be, ESPN analyst Brett McMurphy predicts that?Alabama, Florida, Florida State, LSU, and Texas are all on his radar.

If Golson wants to make a home in the SEC, he would need to apply for a waiver that would then have to be approved by the SEC league commissioner.

The SEC graduate rule according to ESPN is this,

The SEC’s graduate transfer rule — 14.1.15.1 — states the student-athlete must meet seven criteria. Golson would not meet the fourth criteria: 14.1.15.1d — “The student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution [excluding limited discipline applied by a sports team].”

Golson had been suspended and had to sit out the 2013 season for “poor academic judgment,” but returned in the 2014 season.

The Irish’s coach Brian Kelly thought Golson would be back to compete with Junior Malik Zaire for the starting spot.

Golson and the Irish are only a few years removed form the 2012 miracle season in which Notre Dame finished undefeated?and then lost in the championship to Alabama.

But all that is in the past. What matters now is what’s next for Golson. While I don’t think that Golson will be at Florida State next year, it should be mentioned that Jimbo Fisher is looking for a leader after the recent departure of Jameis Winston in the NFL Draft.
