Disgusting conservative bigot and former governor, Mike Hucakbee, is causing extreme amounts of controversy yet again over a “joke” he has made about schools, transgender people and his own feelings.
A new video has surfaced from the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention, in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier. In the video, Huckabee demeans transgender people and makes them out to be a threat. He also mocks the very idea of being transgender?by implicating that it is something people just pretend to be or fake in school, or other public areas.
Huckabee perpetuates the fear-mongering rhetoric that the right-wing has adopted too often, by making up stories of men pretending to be transgender and sneaking into bathrooms to scare little girls. We have heard these stories a lot as a way to deny rights and the comfort of trans people in public. There is no data that supports these notions, of equal protection laws causing waves of men pretending to be trans, but perverse people like Huckabee don’t seem to care.
Not only did Huckabee fear-monger, he joked about his own life. During his remarks, he said:
“Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE.”
He?joked about pretending to feel feminine and telling his coach:
“I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.”
First, I think he is calling it a joke. But I think these sentiments are ones he truly believes. And in doing so, Huckabee is trivializing very real struggles that true trans people go through every day. He is making an utter mockery of so many people like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox, who have helped catapult transgender people into the mainstream. But most importantly, he is making a mockery of the kids, teens and adults out there who hate themselves. He is making a mockery of the ones who cry themselves to sleep and feel as if they are drowning in a sea of intolerance. He is mocking the young souls who only become well known when we find their suicide letters.
SHAME ON YOU MIKE HUCKABEE! He has made a living off of intolerance and moral sanctimoniousness, but we have to draw the line. We cannot keep tolerating these bigoted views as anything other than hate speech. How can he still be acceptable to a major United States party? The Republican Party is a joke and they accept bigotry openly, that is why. We have to take a stand and say we won’t tolerate it!
