Si Robertson: Atheists Don’t Exist

The stars of A&E’s Duck Dynasty have been in the news on more than one occasion for having some not-so-politically correct diarrhea of the mouth. Now, fan-favorite “Uncle” Si Robertson has thrown his hat into the crazy ring and has some things to say about atheists.

In an interview with the Christian Post, Robertson said that anyone who acknowledges the date is recognizing Jesus. That’s right, folks. You need to believe in Jesus, because calendars.

“There’s no such thing as an atheist. I’m serious, because there’s too much documentation. Our calendars are based on Jesus Christ. Whether you believe in him or not, every time you sign your calendar, you add down the day’s date, you’re saying he’s here, OK? That’s documented.”

Now, I will acknowledge that the Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, bases the years on the approximate birth of Jesus, but the months are another story. The names of the months draw from Pagan origins, with March having been named for Mars, the Roman god of war, and Tuesday was based on Tiu or Tiw, the Germanic god of war.

So what was Si’s point about Atheists? That atheists who choose to function in society by recognizing what year it is are also recognizing Jesus by default? Or was he just using some rhetoric to slyly point out that religion, specifically Christianity, infiltrates all aspects of society, even those parts that are not Christian? I honestly have no idea.

All I know is that the ultra-conservative members of this TV family are nuts. How they remain on television, and with such a rabid, loyal following to boot, I will never understand. Maybe if they keep opening their mouths in public, though, their extremist views will come to light and maybe, just maybe, someday they won’t pollute my television screens any more.
