You’ll Never Guess Who Walked The TIFF Red Carpet With Ellen Page! (VIDEO)

Ellen Page has been making headlines since she came out as gay in 2014. She said at the time:

“I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered. And I’m standing here today… on the other side of all that pain.”

Now she has a couple more reasons to celebrate at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF): her new film, “Freeheld,” in which she co-stars alongside Julianne Moore, and her new red carpet guest — girlfriend Samantha Thomas.

“I’m in love. Walking down the red carpet holding my girlfriend’s hand is pretty special. It’s pretty awesome.”

The timing is anything but coincidental, as “Freeheld” is about a lesbian couple struggling for domestic partner benefits in the face of a terminal illness. It was the experience filming “Freehold” that convinced Page that she should make her own story public. She told Out Magazine:

“It really did make me go, ‘Dude, just tell people you’re gay. Just get over yourself, honestly, and support those who are not as privileged. It’s like, ‘You have f—ing privilege, so do something with it.’”

Page and Thompson looked completely adorable together in matching, tuxedo-inspired outfits.

Ellen Page has seen her star rise steadily since playing a pregnant teen in “Juno” in 2007, opposite Michael Cera. She has gone on to play in critically-acclaimed indie films and Hollywood blockbusters alike, including starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in 2010’s “Inception.” Seeing young, attractive, Hollywood starlets come out of the closet is important to our cultural understanding of what it means to be gay and lesbian. We are thankful that Ellen Page is proud to be who she is, and are happy that she has found love, and can share her love with the world.
