John Oliver Has Given ISIL His Last F*ck And It Is Perfect

Since Friday’s terrorist attack, people around the world have publicly commented on the tragic events in Paris. Responses have ranged from expressions of sympathy on TV and social media, to moments of silence at sporting events, to the extreme and ridiculous comments by some conservatives. The best response, however, has to be from the host of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver:

After the many and necessary moments of silence, I’d like to offer you a moment of premium cable profanity. So, here is where things stand. First, as of now, we know that these attacks were carried out by gigantic fucking assholes; unconscionable flaming assholes. Possibly, possibly working with other fucking assholes definitely working in service of an ideology of pure assholery. Second, and this goes almost without saying, fuck these assholes; fuck them, if I may say, sideways.”

Certainly his comments are a bit profane, but listening to John Oliver’s crude attack on the terrorists for the horrible and evil things they did is far better than hearing the attacks on all Muslims for any act of terrorism.

Oliver was not the only one who publicly expressed this sentiment toward the extremists. During the moment of silence at the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks’ game a fan shouted “ISIS sucks” (at the 12 sec mark in video below). A similar incident occurred at the New York Giants v. New England Patriots’ game.

These expressions may not be classy, but the message articulates an anger and hatred we all feel against the terrorists themselves.

These words may be vulgar, but they are certainly not as reprehensible as the fan who shouted “Muslims suck” at Sunday’s Green Bay Packers’ game. The Packers’ quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, quickly put this person to shame when he told reporters, “I thought [it] was really inappropriate, during the moment of silence. It’s that kind of prejudicial ideology that I think puts us in the position that we’re in today, as a world.”

Oliver’s choice of words may be inappropriate and questionable by some, but they were not disparaging as the words of so many others.

At the close of his ‘moment of premium cable profanity” Oliver emphasized:

[I]t is important to remember, nothing about what these assholes are trying to do is going to work. France is going to endure.”

Oliver is correct; the terrorists are ”assholes” whose extreme ideology will not endure. The French, however, will endure. We will all endure.
