Tom Brady: Donald Trump Is ‘Remarkable,’ But Keep Me ‘Out of This Debate’

Tom Brady is the kind of guy that you either love or hate. For football fans, your feelings about him depend on whether you are a Patriots’ fan or not. If you are a Patriots’ fan, you absolutely love him. To many other football fans, Brady and his team are mortal enemies.

For Donald Trump — who I do not see as a football fan — appears to love Brady, even calling Brady “great.” I guess that’s not saying much, since Trump calls everyone and everything great. Trump, however, credits his friendship with Brady, and some comments Brady made about him, for politically doing well in the New England area.

Brady also regards Trump as one of his friends. This friendship seemed clear in a post-game comment he made about the presidential candidate –the one that Trump loves. Brady stated it would be“great” if Trump is elected president. Though he made this statement, Brady appeared fairly hesitant in a recent radio interview about affirmatively stating whether he will be voting for Trump.

In a Tuesday morning interview on WEEI’s David and Callahn with Minihane, the host asked Brady whether he will be “supporting Trump for president in 2016.”

Brady’s response,

“’Can I just stay out of this debate?’ Brady said with a laugh. ‘Donald is a good friend of mine. I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends. That is what I have to say. He’s a good friend of mine. He’s always been so supportive of me — for the last 15 years, since I judged a beauty pageant for him, which was one of the very first things that I did that thought was really cool. That came along with winning the Super Bowl. He’s always invited me to play golf. I’ve always enjoyed his company.'”

It absolutely does not surprise me that it was a beauty pageant that brought these two men together and that they have been chumming it up playing golf since, ultimately becoming good friends. Of course they’re friends, and good friends often support each other, just like Brady supports Donald Trump.

Brady continued,

“I support all my friends in everything they do. I think it’s pretty remarkable what he’s achieved in his life. You’re going from business, kind of an incredible business man and then a TV star, and then getting into politics. It’s a pretty different career path. I think that is pretty remarkable.”

Brady soon ended the conversation about Trump, “saying his comments may be interpreted as him endorsing Trump.”

Though Brady stated he supports his friends in everything they do, he didn’t want his comments to be misinterpreted. Most of us can understand this — just because you support your friends, it doesn’t necessarily mean you agree with them.

Maybe Brady will vote for Trump, but maybe not. Though I’m not a Patriot fan, I’m hoping that Brady is smart enough to vote for anyone other than Trump.

When it comes down to it, however, do we really care who Brady votes for? Of course we know he is going to support his friend and maybe Brady will eventually endorse him. But his endorsement of Trump would be a reflection on Brady and not on anyone else. Anyone who does vote for a candidate just because an athlete or celebrity endorses them, clearly does not have a mind of their own — and arguably shouldn’t be voting at all.
