The inmates were last seen around 5 a.m, during a head count. The inmates had gone unnoticed for about 16 hours until the next head count performed around 9 p.m. That headcount was delayed due to a fight that had broke out, and may have been part of the escapees’ plan. The jail housed the escaped inmates with 60 other inmates and it is unclear whether the other men saw the escape.

It was clearly a well-thought-out escape. The men managed to cut through metal, crawl through plumbing tunnels, climb a roof, and rappel down four stories to freedom using a makeshift rope made of bed sheets.

Officials have released the ropes and evidence to the public as they continue their investigation. Police have set a reward of $50,000 for information leading to the capture of the escaped men. Though the police are doing the best they can, they still need help from the public.

“We’re following every lead that we receive. We’re in a position where we absolutely need the public’s help,” Orange County Sherriff Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

Not only are they investigating the escape, the jail is also under investigation on how this elaborate plan was able to have been performed and had gone unnoticed by the staff.

“We are also beginning an investigation as to how this occurred and are working on that — but certainly not with the same number of resources as we are dealing with getting these individuals off the street.” Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens told reporters.
