LGBT Group Get Revenge On Homophobic Church In Best Possible Way

An LGBT group in New York are getting the best possible revenge on a Church renowned for its homophobia. They are planning on buying the building.

The Atlah Church in Harlem is renowned for its homophobic messages and has displayed signs such as “Jesus would stone homos” and “Harlem is a sodomite free zone” outside its doors in the past.

The Ali Forney Center, a group who help homeless LGBT youth, are hoping to buy the building when it goes to auction later on this month and have already raised over $118,000 in just one weekend.

Executive director of The Ali Forney Center, Carl Siciliano, has stated buying the building would symbolise a “real healing of a terrible wound” and said:

“To allow our young people to be cared for and protected in a place where they’ve been exposed to such cruelty and hatred, it would be symbolically a great triumph.”

However, those at the Ali Forney Center do not simply want the building out of revenge and already have major plans for how they will use the building if their plan to buy it succeeds.

Located just three blocks away from The Ali Forney Center, the building is a prime location for the LGBT group to extend their housing for homeless LGBT youth.

Siciliano noted:

“We certainly anticipate that we could provide a long-term housing program there for as many as 20 young people”

The center currently has enough housing to shelter 107 homeless youth but Siciliano said that up to 200 young people are still turned away each night.

Siciliano hopes to extend the housing facilities for the homeless youth because “every bed we are able to obtain is precious.”

The Ali Forney Center certainly seems to be backed by the community as the first $200,000 that they manage to raise will be supplemented by the government, foundations and major donations.
