Harper Lee, Author Of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ Dead At 89


Harper Lee, author of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is dead.

The author was confirmed dead on Friday, February 23, 2016 in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. This was reported by Al.com which stated that multiple sources in Monroeville confirmed the passing of the literary icon.

She died aged 89.

Harper Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for the book which effectively put her on the world map, and it also became a popular 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham.

Her first dip into the world of writing, Lee wrote “To Kill a Mockingbird” in 1949 while she worked as an airline reservation desk clerk in New York. The book didn’t make it to print until 1957 when she submitted the manuscript to J.B. Lippincott & Co., who published it three years later.

Harper was known to be a recluse and even further withdrew into her shell when she suffered a stroke in 2007. She eventually moved back to her hometown where she took care of her sick sister, Alice, who is 15 years older and practiced law till she was 100 years old!

Lee’s second book, “Go Set a Watchman,” was published in July 2015. The sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird, her second book received mixed reviews which were attributed to Lee’s protagonist – Atticus, famously known for courage and wisdom, being transformed into a white supremacist.

All in all, Harper Lee made the world stand and take notice and for that, we celebrate her.
