A series of robocalls endorsing Ted Cruz have been made to voters in a bid to deter them from voting for Donald Trump in the Republican Presidential nomination.
The two candidates have been locked in a bitter battle for the past few months and it seems as though Cruz may have turned to playing dirty in a bid to win over voters in South Carolina.
Despite Trump’s anti-LGBT stance the calls replayed part of an interview with Trump where he claimed he would continue “forward motion” when it came to LGBT rights.
He made this comment when being interviewed by Sue O’Connell, an openly gay NECN reporter, who asked:
“When President Trump is in office, can we look for more forward motion on equality for gays and lesbians?”
Trump responded in his usual waffling fashion and stated:
“We’re going to bring people together, and that’s your thing, and other people have their thing. We have to bring all people together and if we don’t, we’re not going to have a country anymore.”
Although Trump claimed he would back a plot to overturn marriage equality just days before the interview, Cruz has tried to paint Trump as an LGBT supporter in a bid to win over South Carolina voters.
The robocalls replay this question and an automated voice interrupts the dialogue, exclaiming:
“Stop! What does she mean by forward motion? What is he agreeing to? It’s not about tolerance anymore.
“It’s about mandatory celebration. It’s about forcing people to bake cakes and photograph gay weddings.
“Forcing clergy to officiate, it’s about transgender bathrooms in your child’s school, it’s about tearing down our Judeo-Christian values, it’s about tearing down our America.
“Ted Cruz for President, before it’s too late”.
Although the robocalls do not appear to have been endorsed by Cruz’s official campaign he has not responded to any calls to dissociate himself from them.
@dbernstein @mckaycoppins It's my thing. That and forcing people to bake cakes.
