Sorry Students, Spring Break Is Cancelled!

At least it is for the students of Chicago State University. As a way to save money, the University cancelled spring break, originally scheduled for the week of March 14. Not only did Illinois cancel spring break, but are also laying off some employees and eliminating faculty travel budgets.

Though spring break is no longer a part of the school’s calendar, fortunately, the semester will finish a week early and graduation is now two weeks earlier.

Some students already bought their tickets and make reservations for their spring break, including CSU senior Charles Preston.

“I bought a plane ticket to Miami to visit my girlfriend,” he says.

The school says that they will work with the students so that they don’t get behind on their classwork.

“In order to remain true to our commitment (to finish the semester), we have been pushed to the point of having to make significant adjustments to our academic calendar,” wrote President Thomas Calhoun in a letter to the university community on Tuesday.

It is still unclear how much cash the university will actually save from eliminating spring break. A spokesperson for the college told CNN Money that the school would not be able to continue paying its employees if it didn’t receive state funding by March.

CSU relies on state funding for about 30% of its budget. CSU received about $36 million during the previous year.

“We students are really aware of things getting cut and we are really angry with the state government,” Charles Preston, student of CSU told CNNMoney.

On Thursday night, Bernie Sanders is expected to hold a rally on the CSU campus. Sanders has been visiting campuses around the country to talk to students about having college debt and his proposal to make tuition free at all public colleges. Despite whether or not Sanders becomes President Sanders, colleges will still depend on state funding.
