No One Knows What Happened To This New York Nurse

The first sign that something was amiss with 30-year old nurse Mahfuza Rahman occurred on December 8 when she failed to turn up at Bellevue Hospital Center for a shift. When Mahfuza didn’t show up at work over the next few days her concerned colleagues made contact with her husband.

Mohammad Chowdury assured Mahfuza’s co-workers that his wife was fine. He claimed the nurse had been called away to Bangladesh suddenly by a family emergency, but that she was expected to return to work in the beginning of March.

When Mahfuza still didn’t appear at work in March, a colleague reported her disappearance to police.

While investigating the Norwood home shared by Mahfuza and Mohammad Chowdury and their daughter, a police dog from the NYPD canine unit came across a scent in an upstairs back room that raised serious concerns. Police have focused much attention on this room. They have also dug up some concrete at the front of the house which had only been laid recently.

In a move that has raised further concerns, Mohammad Chowdury and his daughter have not been seen on the property for three months. Neighbor Jose Garcia advised WABC-TV that around the time Mahfuza disappeared, Chowdury had asked him to watch his house because he had to return to Bangladesh immediately. The house has sat empty since this time and he has not seen the family. Another neighbor, Pedro Guzman, confirmed that he had not seen the Chowdury’s since December.

At this stage police are still classifying the investigation as a missing person’s case. They have not publicly acknowledged any evidence of foul play and there is still some hope that nurse Mahfuza, who studied chemistry in Bangladesh and nursing at La Guardia Community College, will be found safe and well.
