Sanders’ Camp Moves For The Removal Of Biased Convention Officials

The Democratic race for presidential nominee further heats up as the two remaining rivals for party nomination try to outmaneuver each other. Sanders’ camp recently moved for the removal of two officials from two separate Democratic National Convention standing committees.

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign team has filed an appeal for the removal of Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy and former Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank as co-chairmen of two standing committees.

Sanders’ camp sent a formal letter to Lorraine Miller and James Roosevelt Jr., the co-chairs of the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee. The letter made a formal credential challenge against Malloy and Frank.

Gov. Malloy is the current co-chairman of the Platform Committee and former Rep. Frank is presently serving as the co-chairman of the Rules Committee of the convention. Both of these party officials have been open about their criticisms of Sanders.

According to Politico, the letter addressed to the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the convention says:

“Governor Malloy and Mr. Frank have both been aggressive attack surrogates for the Clinton campaign. Their criticisms of Senator Sanders have gone beyond dispassionate ideological disagreement and have exposed a deeper professional, political and personal hostility toward the Senator and his Campaign.”

Sanders made his appeal because he thinks that the two convention officials have been unfair and aggressive on their criticisms about him. Some specific examples were stated in the formal complaint.

For instance, in a past interview with former Rep. Frank, Frank said that Sanders was “outrageously McCarthyite.” This was in reference to Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s political witch hunt and persecutions of suspected dissenters in the 1950s. It referred to the practice of making unfair and baseless allegations.

Meanwhile, Gov. Malloy has been an avowed loyalist of Clinton. He has also been openly criticizing Sanders by accusing him of being an extremist similar to Trump.

If the two committee co-chairmen would be removed from their official positions in the national convention, it could mean some advantage for Sanders. On the other hand, it might result in further divisiveness within the Democratic Party.
