Rep. Keith Ellison Ordered To Join Historic Sit-In… By His Mother!

Nobody could have possibly missed the historic sit-in on the House by Democratic lawmakers to demand a vote on gun control legislation. And with news cameras turned off, Twitter and Periscope have become an increasingly important source of information.

But sometimes, as we shall see below, information between family members is likely not meant to get out — although the message turned out to be both inspirational and heartwarmingly funny to read.

Basically, someone was scolded by his mother for not joining in on the protest.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) was away from the House floor when the protest started. He was still taking care of matters of the people with scheduled meetings and so forth.

Trita Parsi was meeting with Ellison when the sit-in was happening. In the middle of the meeting, the Congressman’s scheduler came in and interrupted them to put a note down on the table.

Parsi’s tweet of the note quickly went viral with almost 10,000 likes a day later. It’s no wonder either; the note was from Rep. Ellison’s mother, and there is clearly a lesson to be learnt here:

“Your mom called and wants you on the floor”

Soon after, Ellison tweeted an image of himself from the House floor, saying:

“Sitting in on House Floor against Gun violence & Majority’s unwillingness to protect Americans from slaughter.”

The lesson here seems to be that mom knows best. And Ellison is a good son, doing what’s best for his fellow Americans and the nation.

As New Century Times sums it up;

“Proper gun reform is long overdue, and if it takes a little trouble-making to get Republicans to take notice and pay attention that the citizens of this nation want change, well then, so be it. Remember this come November when at the voting booth — we need to vote blue in favor of humanity and not just gun manufacturer profits.
Thank you, Democrats!”

Meanwhile, the gun control issue is by no means solved. Republicans adjourned the House at 3 a.m. this morning, but Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said, according to USA Today:

“The House did not adjourn without a message being delivered […] That there is an epidemic of gun violence in America and that we need to pass legislation to make America and Americans safer.”

Hoyer also said they are planning to discuss what to do next during a whip meeting at 10 a.m. this morning. Stay tuned!
