While it is an indisputable fact that climate change is affecting our world, some republicans still choose to refute science. One of these Republicans is Senator James Inhofe, chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
According to Inhofe, children are being brainwashed into believing in climate change and parents need to reverse this. On the last day of the Republican National Convention, Inhofe was interviewed by radio host Eric Metaxas, where he touched on the issue.
He even told a heartwarming story about his granddaughter:
“My own granddaughter came home one day and said … ‘Popi, why is it you don’t understand global warming?’ I did some checking, and Eric, the stuff that they teach our kids nowadays, they are brainwashed — you have to un-brainwash them when they get out.”
A Record Of Skepticism
Inhofe is not new to his skeptical ways. Just last year, he famously brought a snowball onto the Senate floor to disprove climate change because of unseasonably cold temperatures. This was in the month of February.
In 2010, he brought his grandchildren out to the National Mall to build an igloo during a winter storm. They charmingly named it “Al Gore’s New Home.” In his attempted attack, he seemed to forget that with climate change, there may also be harsher winters.
He is also on record for comparing Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, saying:
“If you say the same lie over and over again, and particularly if you have the media’s support, people will believe it.”
And for your reading pleasure, Inhofe has also written a book called The Great Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future.
The Truth About Climate Change
For Inhofe, and those who think like him, I would like to share a few facts about climate change:
- 2016 is shaping up to be the hottest year on record.
- Sea levels have risen 6.7 inches in the past century.
- Greenland lost 150-250 cubic kilometers of ice per year from 2002-2006
- Arctic sea ice is decreasing by 13.4 percent per decade.
- Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are most likely due to human activities.
Even with all of these proven scientific facts, and so many more, there remain those on the right side of the aisle who claim this is all a hoax.
The “global warming conspiracy” is not threatening our future, Inhofe. Climate change deniers, such as yourself, are the ones threatening our future. When there is so much evidence that something is happening within our environment that we can actively change, it’s irresponsible to stand in the way of that process.
