Carl Bernstein: Libertarian VP Candidate Might Give Up Run To ENDORSE Clinton Instead (TWEET/VIDEO)

There is a possibility that Bill Weld, the vice presidential nominee for the Libertarian Party, will drop out of the presidential race. Carl Bernstein tweeted Friday that Weld

“…Could be a hero … if he renounces his own Libertarian candidacy.”

The fact that the tweet ends with the words, “Stay tuned,” indicates that this might be a developing story that Bernstein is working on. He doesn’t give any more information, so we can only speculate about the likelihood of Weld dropping out.

Bill Weld served as the Governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997. Even though he ran as a Republican, Weld was able to win the governorship of one of the most Liberal states in the nation. Likely, his election bid was successful because of his liberal stances on social issues.

Many high-power Republicans have endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in this election. But the vice presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party dropping out of the race and endorsing her would be unprecedented.

The way Bernstein puts it, Weld might realize that his party’s campaign is only giving Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a better chance. Bernstein references Ralph Nader, who took just enough votes away from Al Gore so that George W. Bush could win in 2000.

Is Weld concerned about being the next Nader?

Well, data strongly suggests that both third-party presidential candidates – Libertarian Gary Johnson and the Green Party’s Jill Stein – are hurting Clinton more than they are hurting Trump.

In just about every poll, Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump shrinks when the third-party candidates are added into the mix.

So would certainly be a logical justification behind Bill Weld renouncing his candidacy to endorse Clinton. Weld did also did not join the Libertarian ticket until after Johnson was chosen as the party’s presidential nominee, suggesting that Weld may not be as committed to the race as Johnson.

As Bernstein told us to do, we will all have to “stay tuned.”
