It appears Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus’s threat to Republicans have had the desired effect. A few days ago, the head of the RNC told big name Republicans to get behind presidential nominee Donald Trump if they ever planned to run for office again.
Sen. Cruz was the final Republican candidate who actually posed a threat to Trump receiving the nomination, and the two exchanged fiery insults during the party’s primary contest and after.
Trump nicknamed the Senator “Lyin’ Ted,” insulted Sen. Cruz’s wife, insinuated that he was ineligible to become President due to being born in Canada (if birtherism worked once, why not try it again?), and also implied that Sen. Cruz’s father may have helped assassinate John F. Kennedy.
Sen. Cruz was game to sling mud as well, and accused Trump of being a “serial philanderer.” He once said of Trump’s ego:
“[Trump is] a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country’s ever seen.”
The Senator’s battle with Trump culminated at the Republican National Convention, where he was a keynote speaker. During his entire speech, Sen. Cruz never once endorsed Trump, only telling gathered Republicans to “Vote your conscience.”
He was booed off the stage, and he and his wife had to be escorted out of the building by a security team.
Before leaving Cleveland, the site of the Republican Convention, Trump was already back attacking Sen. Cruz. When asked about Sen. Cruz’s snub, Trump had this to say to reporters:
“I don’t want his endorsement… If he gives it, I won’t accept it.”
We know we can always take Trump at his word, so we will see if he decides to stick with that plan.
Trump has courted some of Sen. Cruz’s closest political allies in recent weeks; surely this endorsement has nothing to do with any of that.
