Libertarian VP Tears Into FBI Director James Comey (VIDEO)

William Weld, the Libertarian Party’s vice presidential nominee, had strong words for James Comey during an interview Monday. Comey, head of the FBI, announced over the weekend that the Bureau would pursue new leads potentially connected to Hillary Clinton’s emails. In an interview with CNN, Weld said of Comey and the FBI:

“They’re totally off the reservation.”

Round Two

The original investigation into the Democratic presidential contender’s emails found that Clinton’s mismanagement of confidential material was evidence of poor judgment but did not warrant criminal charges. But this weekend, FBI director James Comey sidestepped the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General to brief Congress on the potential existence of new content pertaining to the Clinton email investigation.

Weld explained what the new investigation means:

“It means there’s no way for Mrs. Clinton to know the evidentiary basis for which they made this update to their investigation, and they’ve said themselves they don’t know. It makes it all the more unreasonable to have waded into these waters in the first place.”

Weld Tells It Like It Is

And Weld knows what he’s talking about. Ronald Reagan appointed him to U.S. Attorney for Masachusetts in 1981, where he gained a reputation for fighting public corruption. In 1986, Weld was promoted to Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, where he remained until the end of Reagan’s presidency.

Weld joins other voices on the Right, including Joe Walsh (R- Ill.), Glenn Beck, and Jeanine Pirro, who disagree with the FBI’s handling of the situation.

What Is the New Information?

Renewed interest in Clinton’s emails was inspired by new findings in the Anthony Weiner investigation. Weiner’s estranged wife, Huma Abedin, is a senior member of Clinton’s staff. An FBI investigation of her husband – a former New York Congressman who is now at the center of a sexting scandal – led to the discovery of State Department material on a laptop the couple shared.

It’s not clear how long it will take to learn whether any of the material is correspondence to or from Clinton herself. Preliminary reports suggest that the new review will not conclude until the election is over. But politicians and pundits on both sides of the aisle are monitoring the situation closely. As Weld said in the interview:

“It’s a real mess. And it’s a mess of [Comey’s] making.”
