Republican Hatred Of Obamacare Could Cause Marketplace To Collapse (VIDEO)

In 2010, President Barack Obama passed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which included many health insurance reforms. It made pre-existing condition restrictions illegal and set up a marketplace for people to buy health insurance policies.

From day one, the Republicans in Congress have been trying to get rid of it. It was one of the major topics during the presidential race this year. President-elect Donald Trump has said that he wants to repeal it and replace it with “something better.”

The problem is that he doesn’t have a detailed, coherent plan for this. Now that Republicans will control Congress and the White House, they are poised to repeal the law. This could take insurance away from over 20 million people.

They are saying that they will build in a “transition period” of a year or two. However, this will likely cause many insurance companies to drop out of the Marketplace since many people might not be able to afford their premiums after that.

Topher Spiro, who heads health policy at the left-leaning Center for American Progress said:

“A repeal that kicks the can on replace would put the market in serious jeopardy and the American people will hold them accountable for the results.”

While he might not have a full plan, Trump did have a few ideas about healthcare during his presidential campaign. He wants to allow insurance companies to sell across state lines. He wants to remove the part of the ACA requiring everyone to purchase insurance or be fined. He does want to keep the part of the law that guarantees coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

He does want to keep the part of the law that guarantees coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. I’m glad Trump has sense to keep that. Sick people shouldn’t be discriminated against.

Let’s just hope that Congress will get some sense and come up with a better plan for our healthcare.
