Kentucky Legislature Passes Severely Restrictive Abortion Bills (VIDEO)

Two abortion bills have been approved in Kentucky, with the fine print being unusually cruel. Thanks to Senate Bill 5, Kentucky women are now banned from abortions at or after 20 weeks of gestation unless the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother. Pregnancy stemming from incest or rape are not exempt from the ban.

House Bill 2 is the second bill, requiring that the mother sees an ultrasound image of the fetus and listen to a short sound byte of its heartbeat. The fine print in House Bill 2 notes that the woman has the right to avert her eyes from the ultrasound images and lower the volume of the sound byte. The two bills have been sent to Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, who says he will sign them.

Echoes Ohio’s Proceedings

The two Kentucky laws share similarities to a recently passed abortion bill in Ohio. The “Heartbeat Bill” bans abortions from the moment that the fetus develops a heartbeat. This typically occurs around the six-week mark of a woman’s pregnancy.

These Laws Are Abusive and Cruel

Senate Bill 5 and House Bill 2 are constructed off of the idea that abortions aren’t taken seriously, and they are done with very little discretion. The bills are founded in myths and half-truths.

Women do not get abortions on demand at any stage of their pregnancy. This notion wasn’t true when the Supreme Court ratified Roe v Wade in 1973, and it still isn’t in 2017. Roe v Wade allows women the right to an abortion in their first and second trimesters. Also, restrictive abortion laws will not stop abortions. Abortion is still going to happen, even if it cannot be done in a safe and legal way. Highly restrictive abortion laws do not correlate with lower abortion rates.

When do you think the war on a woman’s bodily autonomy will end?
