4 Ways The Democratic Party Sucked Opposing Trump – But Could Work At NOT SUCKING (VIDEO)

Make no mistake; Donald Trump is a scary president who requires opposition. He has conveyed fascistic vibes on more than one occasion. And I’m not just talking about his insane idea to hold military parades in Washington.

However, it wouldn’t do a lot of good for me to bash Trump when probably 99.99 percent of you agree with me. It pains me to say it, but one of our last remaining hopes is the Democratic Party, and thus far, they haven’t shown themselves to be a stellar opposition party.

Here are four ways the Democrats have slipped up so far that they can hopefully avoid going forward.

Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) testified against Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.). Image: Public Domain

1. Elizabeth Warren’s Vote to Confirm Ben Carson as HUD Secretary

Even after citing his lack of experience and troubling past statements regarding poverty, “progressive” Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) voted to confirm Trump nominee Dr. Ben Carson as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Warren said in a statement that she would vote to confirm Carson because he promised to enforce equal housing laws in his Senate hearing. As you know, character is all about saying the right thing when everybody’s watching.

2. Bernie Sanders’ Strange Comments on “Identity Politics”

Technically, Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is not a Democrat. However, he ran for president as a Democrat, espouses liberal ideals, and now serves as Chair of Outreach for the Senate Democrats. I will criticize him in that context.

After the election, Sanders was quick to bring up reasons the Democrats had poor turnout. He claims the party has lost touch with the working class, and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich agrees.

The problem comes in when Sanders says things like the following quote:

“It’s not enough for someone to say, ‘I’m a woman, vote for me…”

Sanders said this to drive his point home about taking on big money, but his statement is still problematic. Social issues and economic issues are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are inextricably tied. To discuss them as though they aren’t is a disservice to both.

3. Bill Maher’s Opposition to “Political Correctness”

Sorry, but like him or not, Bill Maher is an important voice in liberal politics. Back in August, Maher worried that former Secretary of State and then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would lose the election because liberals focused on issues like transgender rights.

The thing is, according to polls, most Americans (including Republicans) outside of congress aren’t particularly against LGBT rights. During the campaign even Trump spoke in support of trans people using the bathroom of their choosing.

Talk to any given Republican you know. Odds are they don’t care where people pee. Republican state legislators are the ones pushing bathroom laws. If you have an issue with this “distraction,” take it up with them, not Democrats.

4. The Media’s Insistence Upon Reporting Nonsense

As I write this, CNN is in its fifth hour of referring to today’s White House press briefing as “Breaking News.” Before that, MSNBC’s Morning Joe reported that 51 percent of Trump’s inauguration speech was optimistic. If you’re wondering why that matters, you’re correct.

The supposed “liberals” in the media need to stop being afraid to discuss issues like police violence and disastrous pipelines. If it doesn’t fly with their defense contractor advertisers, they need to leave their networks.

Some members of the media have begun to push back. See: Chuck Todd’s face off with Kellyanne Conway.

I don’t know the last time I heard a cable news reporter or pundit flat out call something untrue until the Todd-Conway “alternative facts” interview. Trump’s hostile relationship with the press is frightening, but I’m glad cable news seems to be stepping back from its previous role as a glorified PR firm for the federal government.

We have to resist Trump, but we also have to resist Democrats who don’t do their jobs. Without an opposition party, there is no opposition.
