WATCH: Ellen Discusses The Muslim Ban By… Not Discussing The Muslim Ban

Ellen DeGeneres by her own admission does not “get political,” and President Trump’s recent travel ban was not going to cause the talk show host to change her stance on that mantra. However, she did have a lot to say about her film, Finding Dory, and the analogies she made poignantly touched on timely topics.

In a clip released via EllenTube, the host of the popular daytime talk show welcomed the audience as:

The only people not protesting something right now.”

DeGeneres then launched into a summation of the recent events surrounding President Trump’s travel ban of seven Muslim-majority countries.

In the clip, which is the intro for an episode slated to air January 31, DeGeneres stated that one day after signing the controversial executive order, President Trump screened her film, Finding Dory, at the White House.

DeGeneres then repeated her mantra of not getting political, but did say that she disagrees with “one of those two things.”  She decided instead to talk about the “very non-political, family friendly, People’s choice award-winning, Finding Dory.”

A screen then showed images of the film as DeGeneres narrated that:

Finding Dory is about a fish named Dory and Dory lives in Australia.”

Dory’s parents however live in America, and she commented that she doesn’t exactly know what religion they are, though Dory’s dad “sounds a little Jewish.”

Then things took an interesting turn. DeGeneres continued:

Dory arrives in America with her friends Marlon and Nemo, and she ends up at the Marine Life Institute behind a large wall, and they all have to get over the wall …You won’t believe it but that wall has almost no effect in keeping them out.”

That is precisely the moment where the audience realized just how clever DeGeneres was being. She continued to liken the film to the current state of politics, all the while never mentioning anything specific about the ban.

Almost similarly to the way Meryl Streep spoke about President Trump without ever mentioning his name.

DeGeneres ended her insightful metaphor by saying that:

The other animals help Dory … Even though their completely different colors, because that’s what you do when you see someone in need. You help them.”

I wonder if the White House attendees at that screening understood the underlying message.
