And Then There Were Two–Second Dem Joins Drive To Impeach Trump (TWEETS/VIDEO)

Last month, Congressman Al Green of Texas took a bold step. The Democrat from Houston became the first lawmaker in either chamber to call for Donald Trump to be impeached by the House. In response, several bottom-feeders called into his offices in Washington and Houston with horribly racist comments, some of which called for him to be lynched.

But Green isn’t letting a few racist knuckledraggers stop him. He’s pressing forward with drafting articles of impeachment against Trump. More importantly in the long run, he has persuaded one of his Democratic colleagues in the House to sign on to his effort–Brad Sherman of California.

Just minutes after James Comey’s written testimony went public, Green and Sherman held a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to announce that they are throwing down the gauntlet and drawing up articles of impeachment. Watch a clip here, courtesy ABC News.

Green maintains that Comey’s firing, as well as Trump’s statements after the firing, amount to obstruction of justice. He said that there is no longer any question that Trump obstructed justice. However, there is a new question on the table–“whether the president can obstruct justice with impunity.” His articles will amount to a firm and determined “no.”

Sherman, who represents most of the San Fernando Valley, said he agreed to join the impeachment effort last Friday amid concerns for Green’s safety. He believes that with the evidence that Comey was fired to throw the investigation into the Russian attempt to hack the election sideways, “the standard for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ has been met.” He plans to draft his own impeachment resolution, and expects to formally introduce it within “weeks rather than months.”

Both Sherman and Green openly admit that any effort to impeach Trump will be an uphill battle. While they are both convinced that Trump has already strayed into impeachable conduct, Sherman conceded that it will be “a long process” that will take “additional facts being exposed.” Nonetheless, they should be applauded for at least getting the ball rolling.

Sherman was on hand for Comey’s testimony, and spent most of the day trolling the Republicans on Twitter.

After the hearing, Sherman appeared on Fox Business Network to discuss the testimony. Watch here.

Sherman said that when Trump told Comey that he hoped the FBI could make the Michael Flynn investigation go away, it was clear that the president was threatening Comey. He recalled that when he tells his staffers, “I hope you’ll give me a memo,” he expects a memo. To Sherman’s mind, Trump’s words meet the definition of a threat under the federal criminal code–and thus amount to obstruction of justice.

A number of Democrats have reserved judgment on whether to push for impeachment at this point. Well, hopefully after Thursday’s testimony, more will sign on. For now, anyway, we should all be applauding Green and Sherman. These men are patriots by any standard.
