Stephen Colbert is having a field day over President Donald Trump’s Twitter gibe at Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski after she voted against repealing Obamacare. Colbert couldn’t resist the chance to compare the beleaguered Trump administration to the classic mafia movie Goodfellas, The Hill reports.
Colbert Comes To Murkowski’s Aid
For days, Murkowski kept saying she intended to vote against the Senate’s “skinny” repeal, and did just that on Friday.
Which caused Trump to erupt in a Twitter snivel:
Senator @lisamurkowski of the Great State of Alaska really let the Republicans, and our country, down yesterday. Too bad!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2017
And for her response that she intended to vote against the repeal, she and fellow Alaskan Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan were treated to a phone call from Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who informed them that Murkowski’s dissenting vote may jeopardize future Alaska projects, especially those involving energy extraction, the Huffington Post reports.
So Colbert, who rips Trump on a regular basis, mocked Zinke’s implied threat:
“Trump sent one of his goons to threaten people who cross him. This administration is like organized crime except for the organized part.”
He also noted that Trump has a lot in common with the forty-ninth state and said the president should consider this, USA Today reports. After all, he said:
“…He got his start on reality shows, just like every citizen of Alaska did.”
Displaying an image based on the movie Goodfellas, he quipped:
“It’s ‘Not Very Good At This, Fellas.”
Then he wondered:
“I can’t tell. Is Donald Trump willing to throw an entire state under the bus just because his feelings are hurt?”
Then he asked his producer to zoom in on a picture of the White House:
Can we zoom in on that flag?
So the camera zoomed in on the flag, and the edited picture showed one of the stars crossed out. Colbert joked:
“Oh, that does not look good.”
Several Democrats are also not happy with Trump using Zinke for “political vendettas” against the Alaskan Senators, and Sen. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) adding:
“Running a department of the federal government means you serve the American people as a protector of their rights and freedoms. It doesn’t mean you serve the president as a bag man for his political vendettas.”
The Trump administration is a collection of stunning fools. If you didn’t know any better, you’d swear you were watching a badly produced and poorly written reality show. It’s all part of the waking nightmare we call a Trump presidency.
