RWNJ Pastor: Trump Has ‘Divine Purpose,’ And Anyone Who Opposes Him Will Fail (TWEET/VIDEO)

No matter how he tries to convince himself–and us–Donald Trump is not winning. Not by a longshot. As of Friday night, FiveThirtyEight pegs his average approval rating at 36.9 percent, the lowest on record for a newly-elected president at this stage.

More importantly for Trump’s long-term prospects–and those of the GOP–there isn’t much room for him to recover any lost ground.

Specifically, any attempt to move back to the center could cost him support among the base.

Most presidents in Trump’s position would firmly be in code-calling territory. But Trump is able to keep his head above water in part because the religious right is still bowing before him. To hear them talk, the opposition to Trump is driven by witchcraft, demons, and the devil himself. Small wonder that even in the face of the almost-daily outrages coming from this White House, well over 70 percent of white evangelicals still approve of Trump’s performance.

In the last 72 hours, we’ve gotten two very lovely reminders of the mentality that drives the religious right’s continued backing of Trump. On Wednesday, Rick Wiles led his audience in prayer against the demons that are supposedly attacking the Donald. On the heels of this, another one of Trump’s fundie cheerleaders, Rick Joyner, warned that those who want to bring Trump down are on a fool’s errand.

Joyner is in a class by himself among pro-Trump fundies. He was one of the earliest to declare that the resistance to Trump was driven by evil. As far as he was concerned, the Women’s March was infested with the “Jezebel spirit.” He has declared than anyone who opposes Trump risks getting “smacked” by God for their trouble, and has even called for martial law to be declared in the event of any attempt to impeach the Donald.

In a similar vein, Joyner took to Facebook on Thursday afternoon to deliver yet another warning to Trump’s foes. His explanation? God put Trump in office, so anyone opposing him is wasting their time. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.

Joyner went to air just hours after word got out that Robert Mueller had impaneled a grand jury to investigate Russia’s efforts to hack the presidential election. He dismissed as no big deal–even in the face of mounting evidence that Trump campaign operatives indeed sought help from the Kremlin.

To Joyner’s mind, God is “disciplining” this country, and it is finally reaching the government. He believes that it won’t be long before we become a “righteous nation” as defined in the Bible. To hear him talk, one sign that we’re about to become a righteous nation is seeing those who stand up against Trump fall on their faces.

“Trump isn’t going anywhere. Watch everybody fall who goes after him. Watch it. It’s not because Trump’s so righteous either. It’s because he has a purpose, a divine purpose. God put him there, and only God is going to be able to take him out. You watch what happens to everyone else who tries. Watch what happens to our Congress. Watch what happens to the Republicans who are obstructionist and devious in their methods too–claim to be one thing and have turned out to be the opposite. Watch what God does in these days.”

Really, Rick? If any attempt to oppose Trump is bound to fail, then how do you explain signs that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort is getting some very strong incentives to cooperate? And how do you explain Trump being all but forced to sign a bill that will make it nearly impossible for him to undo sanctions on Russia? And on, and on.

Joyner may think that his prayers and those of his followers are helping Trump in his quest to make America great again. But he forgets that there are a sizable number of Christians who know that this country has been swindled, and are praying for this swindle to be exposed. I’m one of them.

And from where we’re sitting, Trump does have a purpose–to expose where people’s hearts truly lay. It says a lot that the likes of Joyner and Wiles still insist Trump is a godsend even in the face of the outrages and lies from his administration–and it isn’t good.

Darrell is a 30-something graduate of the University of North Carolina who considers himself a journalist of the old school. An attempt to turn him into a member of the religious right in college only succeeded in turning him into the religious right's worst nightmare--a charismatic Christian who is an unapologetic liberal. His desire to stand up for those who have been scared into silence only increased when he survived an abusive three-year marriage. You may know him on Daily Kos as Christian Dem in NC.
