The Archbishop of Canterbury is one of the most powerful and important appointees in the Church of England. The current Archbishop, Justin Welby, recently spoke about President Donald Trump’s support among evangelical Americans.
Not surprisingly, the Archbishop is baffled about the support.
When asked about fundamentalist Christian support for Trump, Welby responded with:
“There’s two things going through my mind: do I say what I think, or do I say what I should say? And I’m going to say what I think. No, I don’t understand it. I really, genuinely do not understand where that is coming from.”
He called the President’s attitude towards women unacceptable, but did not rule out a possibility of meeting Trump. The Archbishop of Canterbury is traditionally invited to the state dinner if the President is to come to the United Kingdom.
However, he doubts that the two would be friends, saying:
“I’ve spent years and years in conflict stuff around the world where I met people who had killed many, many people. Part of the job is to meet people you disagree with and to testify of the love of Christ to them and to seek to draw them into a different way. The odds are, it would be unlikely I would do more than shake hands with him.”
Trump has visited Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. However, he did not visit the United Kingdom during his trip to Europe.
He has accepted the official state invite, but there is no set timeline for his visit to the UK.
Considering Trump is twice divorced, has bragged about his unethical business practices, and is an alleged serial sexual abuser, Archbishop Welby is not the only person out there confused by how much support Trump has from the evangelical community. Then again, maybe the President’s favorite Biblical verse will clear things up:
