Before You Delete Your Facebook, Remember What Mark Zuckerberg Did For Planned Parenthood

Facebook is all over the news this week, and not in a good way. Facebook in the news is rarely a good thing. They’re the social network many people—including me sometimes (they ripped me off in the tens of thousands on worthless ads)—love to hate. The “breech of trust” that Facebook has made with its association with data firm Cambridge Analytica is something that will make people take action, whereas in the past, many of us just shrugged when we heard about the unethical things Facebook has done.

To understand exactly what went down in the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal, watch this video.

All of that said (and everyone’s outrage acknowledged and respected), I think we as liberals need to note that Mark Zuckerberg has done something for women that we need to keep in mind before we strike a match to him personally.

From a story I wrote three years ago.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla have donated Facebook shares valued at $992.2 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in Mountain View, California. One of the groups supported by the foundation is Planned Parenthood. How do we know this? They were outed by an outraged Right Wing Nut Job blogger last year. Ha!

The story is probably getting a lot of attention because Zuck and his physician wife [Priscilla Chan] are expecting a little girl. They struggled to conceive and carry a pregnancy, and they totally “get it.” From his Facebook.

I have his Facebook post screengrabbed below for those who either don’t have Facebook or who have already deleted their accounts.

Here is Zuck apologizing for the breech.

Should we all delete our Facebook accounts? Maybe. I think our data is already in the hands of the bad guys, so it may be moot at this point, but I totally understand why some people want to get Facebook out of their lives. But I hope we can keep in mind that Zuck is married to an amazing lady who seems to drive her “mad scientist” in some directions that better us as human beings. Even if his company and social media product bring us all down as human beings.
