Over recent weeks Donald Trump has sought to distract America from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation by starting a pointless trade war with China as well as other U.S. trading partners such as Canada and Mexico.
While many of his supporters are cheering Trump’s “tough action” on trade, experts such as Gary Locke who was a former Commerce Secretary and US Ambassador to China under President Barack Obama.
During an interview with MSNBC, Locke broke down the implications of Trump’s disastrous trade war with China.
“Obviously China is going to retaliate—China cannot be viewed as backing down or being weak,” he says.
Locke noted that American consumers would be hit “especially hard,” and hit Trump supporters with another cold hard truth about starting a trade war with China.
“The reality is that China really is able to get back at American companies,” he says. “They don’t have to buy American products. If they levy taxes on airplanes or soybeans, they can buy airplanes from Air Bus or they can buy soybeans from Brazil. Whereas, with respect to American consumers, so much of what we buy is only made in China.”

Perhaps Trump needs a new adviser, who could explain why trade wars won’t help U.S. workers, on a level that he could better understand. The saddest commentary about the above video is that it could actually work. The bottom line is that Robert Mueller needs to do something soon before this ignorant orange buffon lands us in another Great Depression.
