Trump Suggested Shooting Asylum Seekers–But First Wanted A Moat

Some day, people are going to read accounts of this and assume it’s fiction.

After all, who would believe in 2019 C.E.–the “sophisticated” 21st century–there would be a leader of a civilized, technologically advanced economic superpower who seriously proposed prohibiting foreign “invaders” entry to his country by building around his country a moat filled with snakes and alligators?

We’re not talking about some pathetic tin-pot dictatorship we learn about in a cautionary tale designed to shake our heads in righteous indignation.

Or are we?

Last week, the New York Times reported a livid Donald Trump lashing out over aides trying to talk him out of shutting down the 2,000-mile US border with Mexico in a single day by alternately suggesting fortifying his racist wall with a snake- or alligator-infested moat.

He even dispatched aides to acquire a cost assessment.

As the Times reported:

” He wanted the wall electrified, with spikes on top that could pierce human flesh. After publicly suggesting that soldiers shoot migrants if they threw rocks, the president backed off when his staff told him that was illegal. But later in a meeting, aides recalled, he suggested that they shoot migrants in the legs to slow them down. That’s not allowed either, they told him.”

This comes after Trump last year suggested soldiers shoot migrants who throw rocks at them, and the forced resignation of former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen after she refused Trump’s demand to violate laws and international standards.

This is the same man behind forcing asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their court hearings, leaving them vulnerable to rape, kidnapping, and torture.

This is the same man who recently set an all-time low cap for refugee admissions.

This is the same man behind imprisoning more than a thousand refugee children at Fort Sill, an Oklahoma army base formerly used as an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II.

This is the same man who perpetrated the longest government shutdown in U.S. history for which he stole Congressionally approved Pentagon funds to construct his wall.

This is the same man about whom the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics confirms is responsible for “government-sanctioned child abuse” in concentration camps on the Southern border where prisoners are held in horrific conditions without being charged for crimes.

This is the man no longer considering deportation deferrals for those suffering from serious medical conditions like cancer and HIV.

This is the same man who built his campaign, and now his presidency, on those “rapists,” “murderers,” and “animals” “invading” our country from the Southern border. This is the same man who accused Haitian immigrants residing here under temporary protected status as having AIDS; who claimed 40,000 Nigerians would never “go back to their huts” after coming here; and accused Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador–the countries he called “shitholes“–of “arranging” the migrant caravans of “illegals” coming to get us.

Interestingly, Trump recently approved Poland’s admission into the visa-waiver program.

He must go.
