It seems every generation completely forgets the lessons of history, or, in the case of our current education system, fails to actually teach the lessons of history at all. Uneducated citizens, tyrannical powers in the hands of a government that is less and less accountable to the citizens, governmental power co-opted by corporations with no conscience whatsoever. That is a toxic recipe for a fascist society.
Since 2001 and 2009 (when the Patriot Act and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) provisions began), the government has had a lot of power.? The threat of terrorism gave POTUS a lot of leeway to suspend/cancel many of the rights of accused persons.? Fortunately so far, the POTUS has chosen not to abuse the powers or try to stretch their scope.
The Tea Party is attempting to overturn the 2012 election, and grab the power to use the anti-terrorism laws to enforce their version of utopia, where dominionist theology is the orthodoxy, women become breeding mares owned by their husbands, and the poor are serfs routinely abused for fun and profit.
A video of what happens when a minority grabs power violently:
In the light of the Tea Party fueled government shutdown, and the crass coup d’etat involved, NDAA is a two edged sword. My first instinct on this is that the Tea Party Caucus should be arrested under the provisions of the Patriot Act and indefinitely interned under the provisions of NDAA. If any persons merit the use of extreme measures, it would be those people.
The problem is, anything written to attack someone of a different political/religious orientation with the intent to bypass the rights delineated in the Bill of Rights, tend to haunt the authors of that draconian law when their enemy takes political power and uses that weapon of a law against the original authors thereof.? I can say that we are clearly in perilous times.
Any weakening of resolve by POTUS at this point could literally mean the end of the republic. The Constitution would be fully rendered impotent, and the USA as a nation state would become a third world nation, a failure. No compromise is possible here. There is right and there is wrong, and the Tea Party is clearly wrong. If the party affiliations were reversed and this scenario was playing out, the wrongness would still be on the minority cabal acting completely outside of all legal limits in an attack on the very fabric of our society, completely reneging on the social contract that forms our society.
