In the wake of the Ray Rice scandal, in which the Baltimore Ravens running back was revealed to be a batterer, a lot of opinion has been flying around. We’ve not heard much from other batterers, though. Chris Brown to the rescue!

Rihanna’s ex offered this advice to the embattled Rice via an interview with Rolling Stone:

“I think it’s all about the choices you make,” the singer tells reporter Sway Calloway in the above video. “With me, I deal with a lot of anger issues from my past ? not knowing how to express myself verbally and, at the same time, not knowing how to cope with my emotions and deal with them and understand what they are.”

Brown added that he’s learned to manage his issues through his bi-weekly therapy sessions and has learned how to process his anger and emotions.

“‘This is how you should react,? or ‘it’s good to feel this way because feelings, emotions, and energy are supposed to come and go,'” he says, channeling the advice of his therapists. “It’s not supposed to stay there; you’re not supposed to keep it inside because it’ll bottle up and you’ll become a monster.'”

Indeed.

“To Ray, or anybody else ? because I’m not better than the next man ? I can just say I’ve been down that road,” he says. “I deal with situations and I’ve made my mistakes too, but it’s all about how you push forward and how you control yourself.”

Maybe they can start a club. A support group of sorts for spoiled rich guys who punch out their women. Maybe they can make themselves a persecuted and protected group.

OK I’ll stop.

I genuinely do support these people, who usually are battling demons that many of us can never understand, in their quest for growth and change. But Chris Brown is still a loose cannon, and Ray Rice, who got his wife to actually apologize for him knocking her out, hasn’t gotten to the point yet at which he will even allow himself to be held accountable for his mistakes. Something’s not working. As a domestic violence victim, I know this to be a fact: people do NOT change overnight. Change is very difficult. Abusers have to essentially rewire themselves.
