Well, it’s happened. In Obama’s final two years he will be facing a Congress with a Republican majority in both the Senate and the House. Of course, nobody should be surprised by that. The previous?four two-term presidents have also faced an opposing Congress in their final two years. But surprise or no, it’s a reality we now face. So what should we expect from a Republican Congress?

#1 – An Assault on Women’s Rights

As many states have already proven, Roe v. Wade means very little when it’s possible to restrict access to abortion to the point where it is almost impossible to get one. Just ask the women in Texas or Missouri. And the wage gap? Many Republicans don’t even recognize that it exists, much less want to find any way to close it.

#2 – A Token Attempt to Repeal?the Affordable Care Act

That’s right, a?token attempt. Why? Because they don’t really want to repeal it. It’s been a great talking point for them throughout the election cycle yielding great copy as they attacked it on multiple fronts, but actually repealing it would strip badly needed healthcare from millions of Americans.

The Republican party is not so confident in their own power to think they could come out of that unscathed. Also, as long as Obama is in office, he will veto any attempt to repeal the law that comes across his desk.

#3 – Attack on Any Public Program that Doesn’t Benefit Corporations

It’s no secret. Republicans are little more than shills for corporate interests. They’ll try to restrict the EPA, drill in National Parks, and attack anything else that takes money out of corporate pockets, consequences be damned.

#4 – An Attempt to Put the Same-Sex Marriage Genie Back in the Bottle

It seems Republicans aren’t happy unless someone is being oppressed or a minority group’s civil rights are being violated. The point of the spear this cycle is going to be same-sex marriage and an attempt to turn the political tide in this regard. Primary authority currently rests with each individual state, but SCOTUS is considering hearing a case to make a decisive ruling and pressure is sure to be applied.

#5 – Tears. Lots of Tears.

Republicans are dancing in the streets right now because they see this as a hard-fought victory and not the historical inevitability that it actually is. They mistakenly believe the entire country is unified behind them, and that they will be able to bully the president and the Democratic minority with the will of the people. They are wrong, so very very wrong.

It won’t happen, and certainly not to the extent they hope and expect. As a result, in true bully fashion, they will cry and whine about how unfair it all is when they don’t get their way.

But surely we can expect more than just what’s written above. What do you expect from a Republican Congress?
