While most people are gearing up to watch “50?Shades of Grey” on Valentine’s Day, there are many others who are encouraging people to instead spend their money on something else instead. The movie based on the first book, which most have read or are familiar with, is set to open in theaters on Feb. 14.

The Twitter account #50DollarsNot50Shades is asking?people to donate money to a domestic violence charity?instead of paying to see the movie. Organizations such as women’s shelters, anti-pornography, and other advocates have stated they find the film offensive and violent toward women. They also believe it creates an unhealthy view of sexuality.

The books and movie have had controversy from the very beginning. Many advocates and members of the Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism community have had problems with the story. Many who participate in the BDSM?lifestyle have said the story is not at all reflective of their real-life lifestyle. The relationships in the BDSM world are based on being safe and consensual, its participants attest.

Objections are reaching the box office, too.?Malaysia announced this week that the movie has been banned in the country. Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Hamid, chairperson of Malaysian Film Censorship Board said:

?The board made a decision in view of the film containing scenes that are not of natural sexual content. The content is more sadistic, featuring scenes of a woman being tied to a bed and whipped.?

“50?Shades of Grey” is sure to be popular at the movie theater, and is highly anticipated by fans of the books. The controversy is not going to end anytime soon, either. If Hollywood?decides to make the whole series, the debate will only continue. If someone is truly interested in the BDSM lifestyle, they should learn about it from people who already are part of it. (Abuse of any kind is never healthy to experience, of course.)

Lastly, consenting adults should be free to choose how they enjoy their sexuality. As long as they are not doing anything illegal, they should be free to express what they enjoy. A couple that loves each other should be free to enjoy that love together.
