Three members of the Baltimore Police Department have been charged with theft in conjunction with the looting which took place in the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray on April 25.
Two officers, who were assigned to the Baltimore corrections department, have been suspended without pay when a video showed them leaving a convenience store holding snack items. The two officers were identified as?Tamika Cobb and Kendra Richard.
In a separate incident,?Officer Maurice Lamar Jeffers has been charged with?theft of government property and ?converting property of another? for allegedly taking $3,000 in cash which had been left by authorities in a local hotel room.
Public Safety and Correctional Services Secretary Stephen T. Moyer commented on the actions of the officers by stating:
?We will not allow the vast majority of our employees who are honest and hardworking to be tainted by the actions of a few.”
Bail for?Cobb and Richard was set at $35,000 for each. Jeffers, who is accused of stealing the $3,000, had been suspected of previous illegal actions. He had been?accused of theft on three separate occasions between 2005 and 2011.
What makes the actions of these three officers all the more galling is the fact that right wing news outlets–most notably Fox News–sought to accuse the looters shown on TV as being “thugs,” while defending the actions of the police at the time of the protests and riot. As should be obvious to all, there are no clear cut good guys and bad guys in this situation.
So when exactly will blowhards such as Bill O’Reilly, Megyn Kelly, and Sean Hannity be featuring the illegal acts of these dirty cops on their shows? Don’t hold your breath waiting on that to happen. It doesn’t fit into the narrative the propagandists at Fox are trying to perpetuate.
