Unfortunately, there are instances when the 21st century United States seems to disappear into the 19th century United States. Recently, the Long Island town of Lindenhurst had one such time-bending incident take place.
Last week, Ronica Copes, a resident of Lindenhurst for nearly two years, opened her mailbox to find a startling letter inside.
Copes would write on her Facebook wall, in response to the letter:
“Sooooo, I’m checking my mail and when I come across this I can’t help but laugh… wait, it’s not funny though. Where they do that at? Oh yeah Lindenhurst. Unbelievable but then it’s not… our daily reality, I’ve just never seen it in this form.”
Even though the letter states to be from the Lindenhurst community (the envelope had no return address), Lindenhurst village and Babylon town officials stated jointly the letter does not reflect the views of the community. From CNN:
“‘We strongly condemn this hateful letter and are working closely with the Suffolk County Police and our Anti-Bias Task Force to investigate this incident,’ the joint statement said.”
In a more abrasive statement, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone verbally rabbit punched the author of the letter. From PIX11:
“To the coward who committed a hate crime against an innocent family in Lindenhurst — There is no place for intolerance in Suffolk County. I know the Suffolk County Police Department will do everything possible to solve this hate crime, out you and see you punished. I stand together with all Lindenhurst residents who decry this act of hatred. This community and all of Suffolk County are better than that.”
Ronica Copes has stated her family is not moving. Good for her. She and her family shouldn’t let the ignorance and despicable attitudes of one or more idiot white people stop her from living in Lindenhurst, regardless of its “84% white population.”
