With the Supreme Court expected to rule on marriage equality in the coming weeks, Rick Santorum has made it clear that if the Supreme Court rules in favor of marriage equality, he will “fight it.”
In an interview with Chuck Todd on NBC’s?Meet the Press, Santorum expressed his reasoning for challenging the Supreme Court’s authority. From The Huffington Post:
“Roe versus Wade was decided 30 some years ago, and I continue to fight that, because I think the court got it wrong. And I think if the court decides this case in error, I will continue to fight, as we have on the issue of life … We’re not bound by what nine people say in perpetuity.”
Santorum did not stop there. Next, he gave Chuck Todd a lesson in the system of checks and balances. From The Huffington Post:
“‘I think it’s important to understand that the Supreme Court doesn’t have the final word. It has its word. Its word has validity. But it’s important for Congress and the president, frankly, to push back when the Supreme Court gets it wrong,’ he said.”
That is an interesting statement purveyed by the man who thinks marriage equality is, well, equal to marrying domesticated pets. Unfortunately for Santorum, he seems to not fully understand what the Supreme Court is and how it functions.
“The Supreme Court is the highest tribunal in the nation for all cases and controversies arising under the Constitution or the laws of the United States. The Court stands as the final arbiter of the law and guardian of constitutional liberties.
According to the Constitution (Art. III, ?2): “The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity, arising under this Constitution, the Laws of the United States, and Treaties made, or which shall be made, under their Authority;…”
That is straight from the horse’s mouth, Dick.
