John Oliver Calls Out Whoopi Goldberg’s Defense of “10 Surprising Things”

On “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the talk-show host?featured a segment that called out Whoopi Goldberg’s unending defense of abusive and disgusting men like Bill Cosby, “He has not been proven a rapist,” and Roman Polanski, “I don’t believe it was ‘rape-rape,'” domestic violence perpetrators like Chris Brown, “Nobody knows what happened, so all you haters out there, just find something else to hate until you get all the facts,” and Ray Rice, “If you hit somebody, you cannot be sure you are not going to get hit back.”

Goldberg, co-host of ABC’s “The View,” has come under fire recently for her continued defense of Bill Cosby, despite claims by more than 40 women with similar stories of being drugged and raped by Cosby over a period of several decades, and Cosby’s 2005 admission that he bought Quaaludes for the purpose of having sex with women.

Whoopi recently defended herself by saying:

“Here’s the bottom line, for me: It’s my opinion. And the American courts agree with me, because still he has not been taken to jail or trial on anything. So, back off me!”

That isn’t entirely true. Cosby actually was taken to court in 2005?by one accuser with 13 Jane Does backing her up with similar stories of being drugged and sexually assaulted by Bill Cosby. He settled out of court.

Still, John Oliver’s cheeky “And Now This” segment certainly highlighted a disturbing trend in statements by Goldberg. Although a few were simply funny, such as her defense of her appearance in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film, the majority of Goldberg’s defensive statements support some pretty despicable acts by men against women. She defended Ray Rice’s act of domestic violence against his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, Chris Brown’s brutal beating of singer and then-girlfriend, Rhianna, and Mel Gibson’s drunken tirade against his wife in which he told her “if you get raped by a pack of n****rs, it will be your fault.”

It makes you wonder exactly what would need to happen for Goldberg to begin listening to women and believing that they have survived horrific things at the hands of a celebrity. Rhianna’s disturbing pictures of her battered face? Nope. A video of Ray Rice delivering a knock-out punch to his fiance and then dragging her out of an elevator? No again. Cosby’s admission that he gave women Quaaludes for sex, along with dozens of women who have accused him??Not a chance.

None of those women, pictures, videos, or confessions prove anything to Whoopi.
