A young Mississippi couple, newlyweds, had just arrived at the airport to take off for their honeymoon. And then they were arrested. They weren’t actually going on a honeymoon, they were going to join ISIS.  After a lovely June wedding, Jaelyn Delshaun Young and Muhammad Oda Dakhalla decided they had had enough of America’s hypocrisies. Not only were they going to leave, they were going to help in trying to to destroy America.

ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham), according to the bulk of its literature and videos, believes peace is not an option in their holy war, and genocide is a goal. (I’m not making this up.) Per their interpretation of the Koran, they are important players in the soon-to-come end of the world.

ISIS attracts people looking for a happier life. Lost souls, and the lonely and angry, are looking for people who feel as they do, and a lifestyle that includes their personal priorities. Because ISIS is an equal opportunity organization, with a wide range of needs, ISIS attracts a broad range of people. Computer nerds to violent sociopaths all have a place in ISIS. The beheadings are not seen as horrific, but as a display of triumph.

Our honeymooners were seeking a lifestyle change. Americans volunteering their services to ISIS are seekers. As with most seekers, many are shocked by the reality of ISIS when they actually arrive. Some are not, and fit right in. For the most part, their perspective of ISIS is quite unrealistic, and the ISIS “salesmen” do everything they can to heighten the illusion. (They’re all great people working toward a common cause.)

The two honeymooners sat in the courtroom on Tuesday, side by side, as their communications with ISIS were described by the prosecutors. The prosecutors also explained the couple’s plans to fly to Turkey, and then Syria, to join the “Islamic State.” Ms. Jaelyn Young was portrayed as the mastermind, and her communications with FBI agents posing as ISIS supporters were detailed. In one of her emails, she expressed her happiness about the recent shootings in Chattanooga, where 5 service members were killed. Ms. Young, prior to the wedding, said, “Our story will be that we are newlyweds on our honeymoon.”

Citing the careful planning for their trip to join ISIS, the judge ordered the couple be held without bail. If convicted, the couple faces up to 20 years in prison. Too much, or not enough?
