The University of Central Florida has suspended its chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity and is moving to pursue a Title IX investigation after a recording surfaced in which several fraternity brothers can be heard chanting about rape and promoting sexual assault.

On the tape, several Sigma Nu members can be heard saying:

“Let’s rape some bitches. We’re raping some bitches. We’re gonna rape ’em, who cares.”

A woman who does not attend Central Florida made the recording after she spent some time in an off-campus fraternity apartment with her then-boyfriend,  who is a current Sigma Nu member. She then turned the recording over to a woman who does attend UCF. The second woman used the tape to file a complaint with the university.

The fraternity was notified of its suspension on July 20. Sigma Nu will remain on suspension until a student conduct hearing is held on August 20.

Based on UCF student policy, individual students involved in the incident could also face punishment as severe as expulsion from the University if it is determined they violated any policies. If the Sigma Nu chapter is found to be in violation, the school could impose sanctions, ban the fraternity from campus life, or even suggest revocation of the chapter’s charter, which would end the frat’s connection with the school.

The national Sigma Nu fraternity is also investigating the matter and said in statement:

“Sigma Nu officials received copies of recordings from the UCF police department. The words used by people in the recordings are disrespectful, despicable and vile. The Fraternity and University are investigating the recordings. Following the completion of the investigation, the Fraternity will take action as may be appropriate.”

This is not the first time Sigma Nu has been under investigation at UCF. Earlier this year, a woman filed a complaint alleging she was raped at UCF’s Sigma Nu fraternity house. The school later found the student guilty of sexual misconduct and suspended him for a year. In April, UCF turned over the results of its investigation to the State Attorney’s office.
