What once looked like a promising NFL career for Robert Griffin III has, once again, been derailed by injury. Griffin III was knocked out of a pre-season game last week with a concussion. But the Redskins are going to keep RGIII even despite the cap implications.

According to espn,

“Griffin will count $6.7 million on the salary cap, but it’s a hit the Redskins can absorb; Washington entered the weekend with $12.5 million of space available. Should Griffin suffer an injury that extends into the 2016 season, his $16.1 million salary for next season is guaranteed. The Redskins total cap hit at quarterback of $8.9 million is 36.27 percent below the league average.”

Robert Griffin III has made headlines in his short career for his bouts with his doctors and the unchanging criticism that he has received because he has been unable to stay on the field.

In week 16 of his rookie season RGIII suffered an LCL sprain and played in the wildcard game vs the Seahawks despite reportedly not being cleared to play. The following season Griffin sat out the last three games for an undisclosed reason.

In 2014, RGIII dislocated his left ankle and only managed to play in 9 games.

For now it looks like RGIII will stay on as the back-up and that’s why it might be the time for the Redskins to ship him off. Many other qb’s have benefited from a change of scenery after injury, including Drew Brees and Peyton Manning.

During the 2005 season, in the last game Drew Brees tore his labrum. After the season the Chargers wouldn’t pay the injured Brees a top 5 salary so he headed to New Orleans.

Following the 2012 season, Peyton Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts after multiple neck surgeries and signed with the Denver Broncos. And we all know how that went, shattered records.

While the solution for RGIII might not be immediate, he is only 25 and has a host of talent but he needs to leave the Washington Redskins.
