When a photo is taken of a person, we have no way of knowing if it may be the last time they will ever be seen alive. Such is the case with the pictures you see below, many of which are truly haunting in light of how tragic the deaths of these incredibly talented people are, even to this day.
Philip Seymour Hoffman
This is a a tintype photograph, part of a series taken at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Just two weeks later, Hoffman was found dead in his apartment from an accidental overdose of heroin.
Steve Jobs
This photo of an emaciated Steve Jobs was taken shortly before the Apple founder passed away as a result of pancreatic cancer.
Patrick Swayze
This photo of Swayze was his last appearance in public before he died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 57.
Elvis Presley
This photo of Elvis was shot by paparazzi as he returned from an evening out. He died later that same night from a heart attack brought on by a combination of fourteen prescription drugs.
Bob Marley
In this photo, Marley weighs only 77 lbs. He had been battling a rare form of skin cancer for four years, and died at the very young age of 36.
Freddie Mercury
Already appearing quite frail, Mercury died in November 1991 from pneumonia and complications related to AIDS.
Robin Williams
This is the last known photo of Robin Williams, taken at an exhibition he attended a few days before he hanged himself. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and had also suffered from depression on and off for many years.
Jimi Hendrix
This is the last known photo of Jimi Hendrix. It was taken by his girlfriend hours before he died from choking on his own vomit after he combined alcohol and sleeping pills.
Richard Pryor
This photo shows the legendary comedian shortly before his death in 2005, pictured with comedian Eddie Griffin. Pryor had suffered from multiple sclerosis and heart disease since the 1980s. His wife Jennifer said that “at the end, there was a smile on his face.”
Robert F. Kennedy
Senator Robert F. Kennedy is pictured here after he was fatally shot by Sirhan Sirhan. He was assassinated just five years after his brother, President John F. Kennedy.
John Lennon
John Lennon is pictured here signing a copy of an album for Mark David Chapman, who fatally shot Lennon six hours later.
Heath Ledger
Ledger is pictured here on the set of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, just days before he died in his New York apartment from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.
