Secretary Clinton was in Florida today and spoke to her supporters about a wide variety of issues. But Hillary Clinton was MOST passionate when discussing the recent shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon and the need for better gun control.
She went OFF on the gun manufacturers, the NRA, and the politicians they have purchased. I have RARELY seen her this passionate and upset. Here are her remarks from today’s campaign event, which were also posted to her Facebook page:
“It is just heartbreaking, it is sickening to me to see another massacre. People should not have to be afraid to go to college, like this one, or go to the movie theater, or go to bible study. What is wrong with us that we can’t stand up to the NRA and the gun lobby and the gun manufacturers they represent?
“You know, this is not just tragic. We don’t just need to pray for people. We need to act. And we need to build a movement. It’s infuriating. Every time there’s another massacre Republicans and the NRA say, now is not the time to talk about guns. Yes, it is. But more than talk, it is time to act.
“But Republicans keep refusing to do anything to protect our communities. They put the NRA ahead of American families. It is wrong and we need to make every politician who sides with them to look into the eyes of parents whose children have been murdered and explain why they listen to the gun lobbyist instead.
“Now, I am well aware that this is a political mountain to climb. But you don’t get anything done in this country if you don’t start by calling it out. And we have had too many murders, too many people who should have never gotten guns in the first place taking out whatever their rage, their fury, their mental problems are by killing other people. And I will, as your president, never relent on trying to work on this.”
I knew when she said “what is wrong with us…” that this was going to be a verbal assault, and I am here for it! Someone needs to put these people in their place. Senator Sanders is obviously better on this issue than Republicans, but he has often complained about both sides “shouting.” Well you know what, I am glad that Mrs. Clinton is this passionate.
I am angry and so are many Americans. How many people have to be slaughtered before the gun zealots in this country care? When will they be fed up? I was most taken aback when Hillary said that politicians need to look into the eyes of those who have lost children to gun violence. I was snapping all around! Hillary Clinton put this issue in perspective and adequately showed just how egregiously steadfast so many have been in blocking any and all sensible gun control legislation.
We need more people like Hillary on this issue. We need to call the people who support more guns out! They are killing us. Their inability to move on this issue and be like every other modern and civilized nation is enabling the amount of gun deaths and mass shootings that we have become desensitized to. I hope that something will change but I know those chances are slim to none. We need to collectively ask the NRA and the right wing nutjobs who support them, how many is enough? How many people will be killed before you care about humans more than guns?
