A woman in Aurora Hills, Michigan, saw two men shoplifting at Home Depot and decided to take the law into her own hands. Now she may face legal problems of her own.

According to reports, a 47-year-old woman was watching from the store’s parking lot on Tuesday as a loss prevention officer attempted to stop some shoplifters. When the suspects tried to flee in a SUV, the pistol-packing mama pulled out her concealed 9mm handgun and began firing.

Dang! That is one self-defending lady you do not want to mess with!

The SUV managed to escape, but police say that at least one of the bullets hit the vehicle, flattening a tire. The suspects were described as two men in their 40s, one black and one white. It is unclear if either of the men were shot or wounded as they fled.

Auburn Hills police are investigating and have not yet decided whether or not to charge the woman. She did possess a valid concealed carry permit and is cooperating with authorities.

But this does lead one to wonder: Are we comfortable with the average citizen taking the law into his or her hands? Suppose the woman had missed or a bullet gone wide and hit another person, perhaps a child. Would this woman be such a hero in that scenario?

Look, I don’t have a problem with people carrying guns in a lawful manner. But I don’t exactly relish the thought of walking out of a home-improvement store with some storm windows and seeing a woman aiming a handgun at me. Here, you can have the windows! Take them! Take my wallet and car, too! They’re all yours!

I’m not sure the police really need or welcome this kind of assistance. Seems to me a person could cause more harm than good.
