It seems like only yesterday that President Obama was decrying the right wing and Republican Party’s use of fear, hate, and conspiracy theory fueled politics. It seems like Republicans couldn’t wait to prove just how right the President was.
Superior City Mayor Bruce Hagen repeated the discredited conspiracy theory that President Obama is a Muslim, adding his own unsavory flavor of hate to the mix. According to Fox21KQDS:
“Mayor Bruce Hagen’s message was in response to a photo of First Lady Michelle Obama. Hagen said, “Unbelievable! She and her Muslim partner have destroyed the fabric of Democracy that was so very hard fought for.”
President Obama’s 2008 and 2012 victories were built on one of the most diverse and pluralistic voting coalitions in American history. Funny way to define destroying the fabric of democracy. The President is a Christian American, born in Hawaii.
The Mayor’s crude comments about the First Lady coincided with Donald Trump’s sexist attacks on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign and use of the bathroom reminding Americans that Republican hate speech is aimed at everyone.
The Mayor wasn’t finished spewing falsehoods, as he repeated another myth, that the United States was founded on “Christian Values”. Ever hear of the Establishment Clause, which prohibits the establishing of an official religion Mr. Hagen? Perhaps the Mayor should familiarize himself with Mr. Thomas Jefferson:
“Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch toward uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one-half the world fools and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.”
In response to the Mayor’s right wing rhetoric, the City Council of Superior City called on him to retract and apologize for his comments or resign.
